What a great day we had last Thursday! 28 pirates from Amazon enjoyed climbing, flying in a helicopter and looking at Lord Nelson’s HMS Victory. We also learned facts about pirates and made a pirate ship that would float on the water without falling over!
Camp Amazon have been exploring the different habitats in our school grounds. As part of this topic we undertook a spot of pond dipping in the lovely summer sun.
The children have been learning to recognise and name some of the creatures they found, as well as how the creatures move, what they eat and reasons why they are perfectly suited to living in a watery habitat.
We were fascinated to find baby newts, pond skaters, ramshaw snails, water boatmen and blood worms. When we get home, challenge us to tell you some amazing facts that we have researched about these creatures.
Today we all became owl experts when Troy the owl came to visit us. We learnt the names of some owls, heard their cries and felt the softness of owl feathers.
In the afternoon we spent some time creating non-chronological reports about nocturnal animals.
Kyle wrote: “Owls have a circle round their face which is called a facial disc. A facial disc is used to help them hear.
Rory wrote “Owl pellets are owl sick. They have to cough up pellets so they can eat more food because they have a very small tummy”.
Violet knew that; “There feathers are really fluffy because when they fly they want to be silent.
Dylan wrote; “Did you know owls have sharp talons? They are almost like claws”.
We really enjoyed Troy’s visit today and can’t wait to learn some more amazing facts about animals in the future.
Yesterday Mrs Twit came into the hall during lunch time and offered people worms in spaghetti and eye balls in water. Edward
She heard there was a dinner lady job going and was trying to find out if she could do the job. Rory
She was trying to be nice but we didn’t like her food. Ryley
The food was disgusting because it had worms in it. Olivia
She smelt like sardine oil. Dylan
As you know we have been going to the tennis and squash courts in Lee every Friday. Camp Amazon are really enjoying this and have made tremendous improvement!
We swapped over groups of tennis and squash today and we all can see the skills that been have learnt at the courts being applied to their sport today.
And as we did so well at tennis and squash today we have had an extra long tree top time to celebrate!
Well Done Amazon!!
Red Nose Day Today – 13th March 2015.
This morning we took lots of photos of our funny faces by pulling lots of faces at the camera!
We then had a look at a video of a Ngosa in Africa and why we are raising money today and had lots of discussions of how her life is different to ours!
We had a fun day today by making our faces funny for money…
Yesterday we had to bring in hats about our favourite book that we made either in school or at home.
Violet – On Tuesday we visited the library in Lee as part of World Book Day and we were able to look around at the many different books for 5 minutes.
Libby – When we went to the library the librarian asked us to write about our favourite book in speech bubbles so on World Book Day we wrote about our favourite books to give to the Library in Lee.
Henry – There was a special competition in school where you had to write about your favourite book and why and the librarian in our school will decide who can win the lollipop prize.
Jack – There was another special competition in school where you made a book at home and had to use our literacy skills. The best book chosen by the librarian would be shown to everyone and put into the schools library.
Ella – Instead of handwriting on World Book Day we watched story videos of other children’s favourite books and we were able to show each other our fabulous hats!
Izabelle – Mrs Barnes and Mrs Jackson read their favourite stories to camp Amazon yesterday afternoon.
Rory – Mrs George also popped into camp Amazon to read us one of her favourite stories.
On Wednesday we discovered a pirate at Lee-on-the-Solent beach.
The pirate’s name was called Little Timmy – said Tia.
Captain Fuzzbeard made Little Timmy walk the plank and he ended up on Lee-on-the-Solent beach.
Little Timmy told camp amazon that when he was on the ship he swapped the gold in the treasure chest for sandwiches and now he has all the gold – said Violet.
Little Timmy also gave us a treasure map, some jewels and gave us a drawing of a pirate called ‘Edward Blackbeard Teach’. He wanted us to find some information about this pirate so camp amazon have decided as their home learning to find out information about him.
When we were walking back to school Little Timmy joined us and came into camp amazon’s classroom – said James
Camp Amazon have had an exciting week!!
Mrs Dolton came in on Monday with a diary she had found on the beach in Lee-on-the-Solent. We also had a look on newsround and found an article about how pirate ships were spotted close to the Hoegh Osaka where they were looking for treasure on board the ship.
We had a look at this diary and the pirate had written two entries, so as class we decided that we could write the third entry for the pirate.
We then had a look at other diaries and came up with our own success stars for when we have to write the third entry for the pirates diary.
The success stars were that diaries are written in the past tense and in the first person.
Diaries also include how someone feels and maybe uses some jokey language. Then we decided to do some role play activities to create some jokey speech that we may want to include in our diaries.
Today we used tea bags to dye our diaries to make them look authentic for when we come to write our diaries next week!
As a class we have been learning about Robin Hood and how we could include this into our play scripts. We have learnt the main features of a play script:
Stage directions: “include characters names, the place and what they are doing” Taylor.
Scenes -” we have learnt that we start with scene 1. This is because we have been writing the very first scene to our play” Izabelle
“The characters names are in big bold writing so the characters can see when they have to speak” Izabelle
“We have also acted out our scenes in pairs to generate more ideas” Taylor.
We have also learnt how to purple polish our play scripts.
